This technique can produce very short pulses with high energy by actively changing the quality of a gain-saturated resonator. Because  of the large amount of energy already stored in the gain medium, the intensity of light in the laser resonator builds up very quickly. The energy stored in the medium is depleted almost as quickly, in short pulses of light with very high peak intensity.
